Wangari Muta Maathai: Positivity Embodied

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Haute Verte Couture has chosen to honor the life and work of a civil rights activist who fought to protect the natural and cultural values and rights in Kenya. Professor Wangari Muta Maathai (1940-2011) was a champion of civil, environmental and women’s rights who dedicated her life to raise awareness on these causes globally. Some of her more famous accomplishments include leading the Green Belt Movement, serving in Kenya’s Parliament, and winning the Nobel Peace Prize. However, it is Prof. Maathai’s fortitude that enabled her to lead revolutionary women-driven communities to reclaim their traditions and that inspired a global movement of grass-roots environmentalists. Melancholia and Sustainabilty

In Lars von Trier‘s film Melancholia (2011) two planets literally collide. The two-act foreplay that preludes this event demands the viewer to meditate on the ultimate question of our human condition. They are forced to examine the question of what happens before the end of the world as we know it? And leave the theater pondering what is left after the earth is destroyed.

While Melancholia does not explicitly focus on sustainable fashion, it uses dress to categorize emotions of the characters and evoke issues of environmental sustainability within their relationship to nature. One of the questions Melancholia explores is how depression can inspire a sense of calmness. This quandary is set against an exquisite backdrop (Louise Drake) with painstaking attention to detail ( Simone Grau) and costume direction that interacts with the natural in almost every shot (Manon Rasmussen.) Melancholia offers fresh look at the role of humans in nature that all of us in the field of sustainability wrestle with at some point.

Sustainable Sex…. And The City

Yup, you knew we had to do it. Come on, what kind of fashion site would we be if didn’t mark one of the industry’s favorite shows turned films, the staple of late 1990′s early 2000′s fashion diet? As we’re sure many of you know, next week marks the opening of Sex and the City 2 (the film) . The follow up to last year’s SATC 1 movie showcases the trials and tribulations of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. SATC 2 is positioned to gross more than SATC 1, which made a reported $26.93 million in the US and Canada on its first day, so we’re pretty sure that studio execs are looking forward to your high-heeled adventure over to your local cinema this coming Thursday night. But what we at HVC want to know is, since 2010 has been a significant year for sustainability in fashion, what measures are the art direction team taking to mark this movement in one of the more influential billboards of American style? Three Cheers for an Eco Friendly Graduation

Image via Flickr.com

Do you remember the hot sun beating down on the back of that hideous synthetic bag of material they called a gown and that cardboard square with a tassel that would have made a stripper blush? I would venture to guess that anyone who has suffered through the ritual of graduation  can almost recall that sticky feeling that the traditional costume gave to your freshly matriculated self. There are of course those awesome renegades who choose to strut their stuff across the elementary, middle/high school or even college stage sans cap and gown, as a couple of free spirits I have seen. Wearing their favorite dress, or in some cases going au naturel. However this graduation season  there’s an entirely new option for the academic Eco Fashionista who simply cannot wait to cross the collegian finish line. Now you can graduate green! Continue reading
